On a clear day the southern portion of the St. Elias Mountain Range dominates the western horizon of Gustavus.  In 1778 Captain James Cook labeled the highest mountain visible from Gustavus -- Mt. Fairweather.  The Tlingit name for this 15,325 ft. peak is “Tsalxhaan”.

Mt. Fairweather is on the boundary with the US and Canada. The peak is less than 15 miles from the ocean! These dramatic snow capped, glaciated mountains make up one of the highest coastal mountain ranges in the world.
