Doug Ogilvy :: Alaska Fishing Guide

Our Guided Tours

Join us on one of our exciting guided tours. We'll explore an amazing wilderness, and experience Alaska's legendary Inside Passage – an intricate network of pristine waterways, granite fjords, islands of astonishing beauty, and home to eagles, black and brown bears, humpback whales, orcas, deer and moose, mountain goats, stellar sea lions, sea otters, porpoises and harbor seals.

Adventure Fishing

This sea kayaking and fishing adventure promises to be sensational. Whisper Marine and Spirit Walker Expeditions are collaborating to offer a unique wilderness adventure along the Outer Coast of Southeast Alaska. Our destination lies over 100 miles west of Juneau, and we will paddle and powerboat an additional 40 miles of coastline, in an area of the Tongass National Forest that sees very few visitors and has no roads. For fishermen, the trip includes casting in streams where Steelhead, Cutthroat and Rainbow Trout, Dolly Varden Char, and Salmon thrive.

Photography Tours

Birding, marine mammals, scenic wonders, and wildlife viewing, all in a special one-day photography tour. You'll learn about the human and natural history of the area, while we cruise past the mouth of Glacier Bay to Cross Sound, at the northern outlet of the Inside Passage. We'll take in a different view of the majestic Fairweather Range on the outer coast of Glacier Bay National Park, then walk around the quaint board-walk village of Elfin Cove. Back aboard the boat, we'll set out to see a beautiful natural stone arch reaching out of the ocean, visit bird rookeries, and observe sea lion haul outs.

Stream Fishing

Whether you are experienced or not, Doug Ogilvy will give you a good day of stream fishing, on one of the many rivers and creeks in the area. Doug has sport fished from the time he was old enough to hold a pole, and he's always happy to give lessons on fly casting, or spin casting equipment. If you don’t like to fish (but your partner does), be sure to bring your binoculars and camera – the wilderness areas we go to are stunningly beautiful, and we often see bears, eagles, and other wildlife.

On a clear day the southern portion of the St. Elias Mountain Range dominates the western horizon of Gustavus. In 1778 Captain James Cook labeled the highest mountain visible from Gustavus -- Mt. Fairweather. The Tlingit name for this 15,325 ft. peak is "Tsalxhaan". Mt. Fairweather is on the boundary with the U.S. and Canada. The peak is less than fifteen miles from the ocean! These dramatic snow-capped, glaciated mountains make up one of the highest coastal mountain ranges in the world.

About Whisper Marine

Whisper Marine is based in Gustavus at the entrance to Glacier Bay National Park, and is owned and operated by Douglas Ogilvy. Incorporated in 1996 in the State of Alaska, we offer guided ecotours with opportunities to see and photograph whales, sea otter, birds, and other wildlife. Specialized filming or photography trips can be organized. Stream fishing trips, and kayak and camper drop offs and pick ups are available.

Fly fish or spin cast for steelhead, cutthroat trout, salmon, and dolly varden char, or come along for the hike and enjoy the wildlife and photography opportunities. Novice or experienced, we will give you a good day on the river. Equipment is available, and we are happy to give lessons or pointers if you want them. With thirty years in the wilderness of Southeast Alaska, we have first-hand knowledge of this beautiful area.

Doug Ogilvy

Doug's first trip to Alaska was in 1968. He moved to Alaska in 1974, and began commercial fishing with his own boat in 1977. Doug has lived in Gustavus since 1978. With over 20 years as a full-time commercial salmon fisherman and bottom fish long-liner, Doug is now “semi retired” from the commercial fishing industry.

In 1996 Doug got a Coast Guard license to carry passengers for hire, and started doing water taxi work in Icy Strait, the outside coast, and Glacier Bay. In 1997 he added fresh water fly fishing, and boat ecotours, providing excellent photographic opportunities for whales, sea otters, seals and sea lions, birds, and perhaps a bear, wolf, or moose along the beach.

Doug received a certificate of completion for an 80-hour Wilderness First Responder course, and is competent in a canoe or kayak. Over 30 years of living, working, and playing on the ocean, streams, and in the wilderness of Southeast Alaska have given him extensive first-hand knowledge of this beautiful area.
